In the past four days, the flood in Niger State brought on by a lot of rain has claimed the lives of seven people.
The rain, which has fallen nonstop for four days, is having a negative impact on seven local government areas.
These were revealed to reporters in Minna by Mallam Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, director general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
He claimed that one person died in Rafi local government while six people perished in Magama local government.
He claimed that the flood had also made several other people homeless.
In five States, including Niger, heavy rainfall was expected for four days, according to NiMet.
“The State has started experiencing the negative impact of the flooding with houses, farmlands, bridges and some linked roads washed away in some LGAs located at up and downstream of the four Dams.
“These rendered many homeless and have affected the socio-economic activities of the communities. The local government areas include Lavun, Magama, Rafi, Kontagora, Gbako, Mashegu and Wushishi,” he said.
He urged residents in riverine areas to relocate to safer areas that have already been identified, and he urged residents across the state to avoid dumping refuse in drainages and to limit their activities near river banks during this period to avoid being flooded.
Inga also warned against standing under trees during rainstorms or staying in unsafe structures because the heavy rain is expected to be accompanied by violent windstorms.
In a related development, floodwaters have engulfed Kontagora town, displacing residents and causing property, business, and farmland losses.
The flood affected residents of Unguwan Yamma, Sabon Gari, BCG, and Mayanka, all of which are located within Kontagora town.
The Kontagora incident occurred as a result of a heavy downpour that occurred on Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and several people are still trying to get the water out of their homes.
Malam Musa Umar, a fish rearing businessman, said he lost more than 6,000 fish to the flood, in addition to other valuables.
The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the incident in Kontagora saying that they are still conducting an assessment of the damage caused by the flood.
